What is the TYC?

The Tasman Youth Council (TYC) was established in 1998, out of a need expressed by local young people to have their voices heard and their interests taken seriously.

We have four regional clusters - Richmond, Motueka, Golden Bay and Murchison, and each cluster works on projects and initiatives relevant to the needs of young people in their communities.

A maximum of 25 members are recruited each year to represent the TYC. The TYC reports regularly to Council to help them with decision-making and planning around providing services and facilities for Tasman's young people!

We also work closely with the Nelson Youth Council team - www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz/youth-council-home/

If you want to find out more about what's involved, talk to the cluster leader in your area, or contact Paul McConachie, Tasman's District Council's Community Recreation Officer - email paul.mcconachie@tasman.govt.nz

Stuff we do:

Jamonline website
It used to be a magazine, now its a website! The aim is to provide an effective way for young people across the region to communicate with each other, find out about events and have their voices heard.
Contributions are welcome. If you'd like to submit stories, reviews, music or other content, please contact Dry Crust Communications on info@drycrust.com

Jam Show
Jam Show (formally Sunnyside Up) is a weekly radio show on Fresh FM which is hosted by Tasman Youth Councillors. The show looks at youth issues, and informs listeners about local and regional youth activities.

Youth Week
A central focus to TYC operations each year, is the celebration of Youth Week. Youth Week publically acknowledges the role young people play in our communities, and encourages them to get involved, share their opinions, showcase their creativity and talent, and above all – have fun.

Youth Volunteer Awards
The voluntary efforts of local young people contributing and making a positive difference to our communities are officially recognised at the annual Nelson-Tasman Youth Volunteer Awards. Members of the TYC are part of the awards committee whose role it is to identify those deserving of a special award.
