EXTRAORDINARY FRONTIERS - Cawthron Science, Innovation and Mysteries from our Environment 12 Nov 2011 - 22 Apr 2012, Saturday 12th November 2011 - Sunday 22nd April 2012, in Community Events EXTRAORINARY FRONTIERS - CAWTHRON SCIENCE, INNOVATION AND MYSTERIES FROM OUR ENVIRONMENT When Thomas Cawthron arrived in Nelson in 1849, at the age of 15, it was almost a 'frontier town'. Ninety years after endowing the facility that bears his name, the Cawthron Institute is still at the frontier - the frontier of leading scientific research in fields as broad as food quality, aquaculture, water quality and bio-security. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Cawthron Institute, the Cawthron Trust have funded the Nelson Provincial Museum to help create an exhibition that will bring some of this science and technology to public attention in a way that will be both enjoyable and educational. Without giving away too much consider the possibility of solving a 'crime scene' on the beach at Takapuna and a 3D exploration of an under-water farm. The exhibition has been designed by Jo Thompson, the Cawthron Community Educator and Sally Papps who designed the very popular Port Nelson Haven Ahoy! The exhibition is a visual treat with plenty of appeal for all ages.

"Of Other Spaces: Scott Flanagan and Ruth Watson" exhibition at The Suter Art Gallery 18 Feb 2012 - 1 Apr 2012, Saturday 18th February - Sunday 1st April 2012, in Community Events Conceptual artists, Scott Flanagan and Ruth Watson will each present a major installation-based art work representative of their recent concerns and practice. Combined, these art works create an "other space“ another way of seeing the world; its history, geography and politics. Ruth Watson works in a range of media to explore and interrogate the traditions of cartography. For this exhibition, she will "draw" a large map of the world using a fine reflective material on the floor of The Suter's oldest gallery. While there are familiar shapes and geographies in this map, it is a reordered view of the world which asks the view to consider the agendas and expectations of mapping systems.
Scott Flanagan uses selected materials to comment on technological histories, in this case, the history of computing and visual imaging in the twentieth century. He will be working in the gallery from 7 February to construct a large woven wall work using VHS tape. This creates a "black mirror" which reflects a pixellated image“ a serendipitous commentary on the change from analogue to digital visual technology. ARTIST'S FLOORTALK: Saturday 18 February 2 pm. "Out of the Blue" by Lyn Broughton 19 Feb 2012 - 10 Mar 2012, Sunday 19th February - Saturday 10th March 2012, in Visual Arts & Crafts Events Lyn says, "This exhibition was inspired by my childhood years sitting on a jetty or perched on a rock, dangling a hook into the deep blue ocean, never knowing what was going to grab hold and appear from the depths ... "out of the blue" as it were.
It is dedicated to my Mum and Dad, who put that first line in my hand, who patiently helped to bait hooks and remove wriggling fish... who put a mask and snorkel on me and showed me the other world that exists under the water.... and who taught me to respect the sea and all the myriad life that lives in it.
"Out of the Blue" is my appeal for fair fishing, both on a personal and commercial level." More Information. 23 Feb 2012 - 15 Mar 2012

Ecstatic Shaking & BIODANZA Workshops 23 Feb 2012, Thursday 23rd February 2012, in Wellness, Eco & Recreation Events Shaking is one of the world's most ancient healing traditions. Inspired by Ratu Bagus, the Balinese Shaman, I will provide the opportunity to experience a new practice or, if you are already experienced, continue your shaking within a group energy. Shaking helps to relieve stress and release the blockages we store in our bodies. Such releases often result in joyous laughter and blissful feelings of relief. Through shaking we reconnect to the Soul, to our original state of being. We are created by energy and once we make the connection to this energy source, we can transform our lives and heal ourselves. Then, after a short break for you to eat the snack you have brought, it's Biodanza. A South American movement and dance system which has the amazing capacity to easily move people into a more connected and integrated state. Not only that, once experienced, this integration lingers and comes with you into the rest of your life. The joy of Biodanza is that there are no steps; so you can't get it wrong. Instead there is a safe and held environment to explore yourself and your connection to others supporting you to re-empower your body to find its own movements; to realign itself.

KBAR - Kaiteriteri Beach Adventure Race 10 Mar 2012 - 11 Mar 2012, Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th March 2012, in Sports Events What is KBAR?
It's the Kaiteriteri Beach Adventure Race! The event caters for anyone who enjoys outdoor recreation in a fantastic location. I've been a professional adventure racer and in my early days I spent most weekends exploring different corners of New Zealand doing the things I enjoyed. Having spent a lot of my life in the Kaiteriteri area and living just down the coast, it's always been a favorite place to train and chill out. The swimming and paddling is excellent, the mountain biking is brilliant and the trail running is wonderful, it doesn't get any better. March is full swing summer at Kaiteriteri and the KBAR event is short enough to be a blast, the races have been designed so that there is plenty of free time, down time and spare time to soak up the place and spend it with family and friends. Is KBAR only for Elite athletes? NO WAY, far from it, it's more for people who want a challenge, get fit and be part of something cool. If you think the KBAR individual challenge is a bit much for you at the moment, no sweat, get a team together and have even more good times. I can honestly say, the KBAR course, location and event is magic! Nathan Fa'avae KBAR

Enterprise Day 15 Mar 2012, Thursday 15th March 2012, in Education, Heritage & Culture Events E-day is held near the beginning of the school year in each YES region across the county. It is a scheduled programme for every student participating in that year and is designed to familiarize them with the programme and to set them in the right direction. The programme is a combination of presentations on areas such as company values, directorships, idea generation and marketing with time for each student company to work together on these areas. The teachers accompany students and it is also a time for students to meet the local YES coordinator. The most popular part of the day for students is the “speed business coaching”. Business people provide feedback on the ideas that the students have come up with for their business OR assist the students to generate ideas for their enterprise or to further develop ideas that they have brainstormed. The point of the day is for students to go away enthusiastic about running their own business. The day also provides an important opportunity for students and teachers to connect with real business people and get advice from a variety of people who have “been there and done that".
